CHAPTER SEVEN

Leanne must have slept, for she woke to discover that the bed was empty. A quick glance at the bedside clock revealed that it was after eight, and with an audible groan she slid to her feet.

After a quick shower she donned cotton shorts and a top, then ran lightly down the stairs to the kitchen.

'Dimitri has already left for the city,' Eleni told her with a smile, and Leanne hid her relief as she retrieved orange juice from the refrigerator, then she crossed to the pantry for some cereal.

The day stretched ahead with very little perceived direction, and when she'd eaten she returned upstairs and changed into tailored white trousers and a matching blouse. Then she applied make-up, slid her feet into high-heeled white sandals, and caught up the keys to the Mercedes.

What she needed, she decided as she cleared the gates and began heading towards the cluster of shops and trendy boutiques at Toorak, was something constructive to do with her time.

Paige had been content to aid numerous worthwhile charities and serve on various committees. However, Leanne knew that that wasn't her scene, nor could she just stay at home doing nothing, or whiling away the hours endlessly shopping.

Besides which, she missed the beauty therapy clinic—the clients, the friendly staff, the contact with people.

Leanne caught sight of a parking space and slid into it. Minutes later she entered a fashion boutique and browsed idly before emerging on to the pavement.

There was a beauty clinic in the immediate vicinity, and on impulse she walked inside and requested an appointment from a receptionist who held the phone in one hand and a pencil in the other.

'Aromatherapy? I'm sorry,' the receptionist intoned with regret.

'Tomorrow?' Leanne persisted. It hardly mattered which day.

'Our aromatherapist was rushed to hospital last night for emergency surgery.' Another phone rang, and she cast it a look of flustered exasperation. 'I'm trying to locate a replacement to take our existing appointments.'

'I'm a trained aromatherapist.' The words were out before Leanne could give them much thought. 'I could fill in for you. I have my own clinic on the Gold Coast,' she added, unsure until that moment just how badly she wanted this opportunity to work out.

'You're not serious?' the other girl queried with a mixture of disbelief and hopeful reservation. 'Do you have any credentials you can show the manageress?'

'Not on me, but I can have them to you in an hour,' Leanne assured her.

'I'll call her. An hour?'

'I'll be back at ten-thirty.'

She was, with minutes to spare, and quarter of an hour later she not only had the job, but she was asked if it was possible to make an immediate start.

The day was pleasantly hectic, with a brief break at midday, during which she put a call through to Eleni to assure her that she'd be home in time for dinner.
